The long anticipated schedule for Monday Night Bouldering!! We decided to start it a couple weeks early this season for all of you who are psyched!! Everyone is welcome - from the novice climber who just bought their first pair of shoes to the advanced who just wants to CRUSH!. Come on out for a great time shared amongst good people. Shoot the shit, gather beta, and make friends and all that other sappy stuff! Bring your friends, family, or dog, whatever!

SO THIS IS THE DEAL: We meet every Monday (if it is pouring lets head indoors for a session, eh?!) at the Armdale Rotary in Halifax, for 6:00pm! Try to get there a bit early as we will leave as close to 6:00pm as possible, so aim for 5:45-5:55pm! We will carpool to a different destination every Monday so if you do not have a car, do not worry! Just show up and we will carpool the best we can. We have always been successful in the past and climbers are always willing to share a seat. If you want to pitch in for gas I am sure it will be much appreciated! Climb Nova Scotia will bring some pads but if you have one please bring it. The more the merrier! The schedule is below.

***NOTE: We understand these areas may not cater to everyone. Therefore, if we deem it necessary we may change the desitnation without notice. Apparently someone on Paces Lake Drive has complained to them that several times dozens of people have been seen trespassing on a neighbor's property, camping out and making fires, and leaving litter and garbage behind. We have also been advised that neither the dockside nor the pullout parking spots are public, and in fact the entire road is private all the way to the highway.

The owners have requested that climbers do not park on Paces Lake Drive - park only on the side of the 357HWY and walk in, being careful to stay on the path along the water's edge and away from the houses on Paces Lake Drive. The landowners expressed their satisfaction with their relationship with Climb Nova Scotia and do not have plans to revoke climbing privileges provided we respect their wishes.

I'm confident that the climbing community is not responsible for this disrespectful and boorish behavior, but that is beside the point. Likewise I know you will all continue to show respect for the people who are kind enough to allow us access to their land to enjoy climbing.

Stick to clear and designated trails and strive to Leave No Trace that you were there. Always pack out your own trash and any other rubbish you might find and note that there are no camping or fires permitted at First Face. It will be held at Ground Zero climbing gym on the 13th of February and promises to be an very exciting event with lots of surprises.
The climbing wall at West Kings high school has finally been completed with a aid of CNS funding. This project engaged many of the students who helped to build the wall and now get to learn a how to climb on their complete project. In order to help introduce the intricacies of rock climbing to student at the high school three CNS board members will be visiting the school on the 25th of January. This visit will involve a route setting clinic and a basic introduction to climbing technique and training. Furthermore, a copy of Eastern Tide will be shown and latter given to the school; this movie depicts some of the most intriguing, fun and difficult bouldering in Nova Scotia.
Major Thanks to Heather Bray for sending out the holiday thanks you letters to boulder fest sponsors !!
Due to the unfavourably warm weather in Nova Scotia lately ice climbing have been limited but CNS is still hoping for some colder weather in order to hold ice daze again this year. Good luck!

CNS meeting minutes September 24, 2009

September 24th/2009

This meeting CNS entertained two guest speakers Gerard Bray and Andrew Nettie, who spoke about provincial funding and climbing at Acadia University respectively.

Funding Opportunities for future CNS projects
Possible funding for more ambitious CNS project may be available through "Good Ideas Funding" or various Community Health boards around the Halifax Regional Municipality. These boards are willing to support "non-traditional" sports (ie climbing) in order to involve and expose a wider population of children to an active and healthy lifestyle. CNS would be happy to hear the climbing community's ideas for future CNS projects in this area.

Acadia University Climbing Club
Andrew Nettie, representing the newly formed Acadia Climbing group, is interesting in teaming up with CNS to introduce students to the Nova Scotia climbing experience with an emphasis on climbing in and around Acadia. The board unanimously voted to make Andrew a CNS executive member who will attend board meetings and keep us informed on the interests of the Acadia Climbing Club. CNS looks forward to working closely with Andrew to facilitate future climbing opportunities.

General Meeting Minutes
CNS is going to get access to the land registry database in order to keep a record of access issues for climbing areas such as T-Bay which has has been off limits to the climbing Community for 2-3 years now. Access to the land registry will also help to establish new approaches to established climbing areas which don’t traverse private property.
The CNS executive board has unanimously votes in favor of abolishing the certification subcommittee due to lack of commitment and intuitive. In light of this, the CNS executive has voted in favor of allowing multi-pitch routes to be counted as multiple "climbs", a term used in the certification requirements. For example, 30 pitches of 5.11 can be counted as 30, 5.11 "climbs" in reference to log book requirements. Furthermore, the required sport climbs can be substituted for traditional style climbs because the CNS board believes that the technical skills required for trad climbing are inclusive to and surpass the skills required for sport climbing.
CNS is looking for photograph submissions for the upcoming 2010 CNS, Nova Scotia Climbing Calendar. Feel free to send all submissions to climbnovascotia@gmail.com
Much thanks to our wonderful member coordinator Heather Bray for organizing membership registry to the point that we now have more than 130 CNS members and know who they are. :D
The CNS Columbus Wall Clean and Climb was a great success, cleaning roughly 10 routes at Columbus wall. Thanks to everyone who attended!

Cheers,

Kate

CNS meeting minutes August 25th, 2009

CNS meeting minute
August 25th/2009

CNS is happy to announce that Boulder Fest 2009 was a huge success with 78 climbers being hosted on the island for a brilliant weekend of sunny day and night sessions. Currently, there is a cleaning day at Columbus wall scheduled for the 12th of September so, come out and get to know a new wall or if you’re familiar with the area help us make the climbs accessible again.

There is also a tentative date for the start of the new Ground Zero’s much anticipated Monday Night league nights. They are rumored to begin on the LAST Monday of ever month therefore starting on September 28th this year. Get ready to Pull Down !!!
Consequently, this year’s extended Monday Night Bouldering sessions will not be held on the 28th or the following night which coincide with League Night.

Kate Smith

Columbus Wall cleanup day - Saturday Sept. 12 2009

As part of Climb Nova Scotia's ongoing efforts to maintain and improve existing climbing areas, we will be holding a Columbus Wall Clean n' Climb day on Saturday, September 12.

Columbus Wall is a fantastic crag in Mosquodoboit, home to dozens of stellar trad, sport, and mixed climbs. Most climbs can be easily toproped, there are tons of moderate climbs for new leaders, and some harder gems are still awaiting first ascents making Columbus Wall a destination for climbers of all levels. The approach trail and trailhead are easy to find thanks to the recent reflagging by CNS volunteers Rich and Zig. If you've never been to Columbus Wall, now is your chance to check it out.

Despite all this awesomeness, many climbs are overgrown with moss and vegetation and in need of maintenence. Come on out on Saturday, September 12 and help clean a line or two and do some climbing afterward! Brushes will be provided, and if you need a harness, belay device, helmet or rope let us know and we can make those available too.

Cheers
mick

Mick Levin
CNS President
climbnovascotia.ca

New update section!

Here you will be able to catch up on CNS's new info.
Coming very soon!!

G
